Revenge porn and Snapchat: how young women are being lured into sharing naked photos and videos with strangers.

Snapchat claims to be safe, but there is a loophole

Two alarming fads are threatening young women on the net, one feeding off the other. The first is the pressure to create sexual, usually naked pictures, snapped in mirrors, to satisfy the urges of their teenage boyfriends. The second is so-called “Revenge Porn”, in which guys post naked pictures of their ex-girlfriends online. Both are side-effects of an online culture which encourages people to share naked photos of one another as part of flirtation, let alone courtship. Teenage girls unwilling to do this are frequently branded as frigid prudes in the fraught world of secondary school; of course, when teenage romance goes wrong, revenge porn rears its ugly head.

Revenge Porn first came to prominence in 2010, through a website called IsAnyoneUp; when that was deactivated by its owner in 2012, PinkMeth took up the slack. The latter is a much more sophisticated website, which not only uploads the naked pictures, but also collates all the other data about the individual in question – their real name, age, location, social media profiles.

Within five minutes on the site, I was able to find several British women who were not only pictured against their will, but also who had huge swathes of their personal data shared with those who were ogling their stolen naked pictures. On one particularly disgusting page, user comments indicated dismay that a 17-year-old girl’s Facebook page (linked from the site) had been disabled so quickly. These absolutely repulsive sites are homes to all of the worst manifestations of online rape culturevictim blaming, forced objectification and the trivialisation of sexual violence.
