The prospect of genetically modified foods being grown and sold in the UK has come a step closer after changes to farming regulations that will allow field trials of gene edited crops in England.
Companies or research organisations wishing to conduct field trials will still have to notify the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the government announced on Wednesday, but existing costs and red tape will be removed so more trials are likely to go ahead.
The immediate change is small, and affects only England, but the government says it will be followed by plans for new primary legislation that will allow far greater use of gene editing in crops in the UK, and a redefinition in law of genetic modification.
That could open the way to the sale of gene-edited crops developed in the field trials, and to further steps such as gene editing in animals, and potentially the production and sale of genetically modified organisms in the UK.
George Eustice, the environment secretary, said: “Gene editing has the ability to harness the genetic resources that nature has provided. It is a tool that could help us in order to tackle some of the biggest challenges that we face – around food security, climate change and biodiversity loss.”
Ministers are keen to use Brexit to allow gene editing, a form of genetic modification that is heavily restricted in the EU, to be used in the UK, despite a public consultation that found 87% of people who responded viewed gene-edited crops as a greater risk than traditional crop breeding methods.
Gene editing involves using and modifying genes already found in an organism, unlike other forms of genetic modification, which can use genes imported from other plants or animals. Gene editing can be used to mimic the effects of traditional plant breeding but is accelerated as it is done in a laboratory instead of requiring years of repeated selective breeding.
Proponents say gene editing could safely be used to develop crops with increased yields or additional nutritional benefits, or that would be resistant to pests and disease and withstand drought, high temperatures or other effects of climate breakdown.
Scientists welcomed the changes. Angela Karp, the director and chief executive of Rothamsted Research, which had a field trial for gene-edited wheat approved before the changes, said: “Gene editing gives us a powerful new tool to accelerate the generation of plant varieties that can potentially be more nutritious, more resilient against climate change and grown with a reduced environmental impact.
“We look forward to building on our science in gene editing to help deliver the crops farmers will need to deliver on Cop26 emissions targets and beyond. We will now be able to scale up our field scale studies and accelerate the creation of new varieties that can future proof our farming.”

Guy Poppy, professor of ecology at the University of Southampton, also welcomed the development but said: “While I understand why Defra propose a proportionate step-by-step process, I do fear that the travel along that path will be slow, complex and fraught with continuing claims and counterclaims.”
However, campaigners said the government was overriding public concern on the issue. Liz O’Neill, director of umbrella group GM Freeze, said: “Genetic engineering – whatever you choose to call it – needs to be properly regulated. The government wants to swap the safety net of proper public protections for a hi-tech free-for-all – but our food, our farms and the natural environment deserve better.”
She added: “This announcement is described as a response to Defra’s consultation on the regulation of genetic technologies. However, no detail has been made available [at the time of writing] on what George Eustice actually learned from the exercise. The consultation submissions that GM Freeze has seen raised a wide range of concerns about Defra’s proposals for dismantling GM safeguards, but this announcement suggests the minister isn’t listening.”
Joanna Lewis, the director of policy and strategy at the Soil Association, said gene editing was the wrong approach and the government should instead focus on helping farmers become more sustainable.
“What would help is a reversal of the … lack of investment in agro-ecological, nature-friendly methods and farmer-led technology,” she said. “We should be investing in solutions that deal with the cause of disease and pests in the first place, including a lack of crop diversity, the decline in beneficial insects, and animal overcrowding. We must increase soil carbon, wildlife and animal welfare on farms to solve the climate and nature crises, and protect human health.”
Gideon Henderson, the chief scientific adviser at Defra, said the government was looking closely at the implications for any changes to the UK law on GM organisms for future trade deals. The EU and some other countries impose heavy restrictions.
Even if GM organisms and associated products were omitted from trade deals, there could be concerns that other agricultural goods could be affected – in crops, by potential cross-contamination, and in the case of meat by livestock consuming GM crops.

Italy to Require Vaccine Passport for Entire Workforce in Europe’s Most Extreme Mandate so Far.

Italy will become the first country in Europe to require all workers in both the public and private sectors to get a vaccine certificate in order to do their jobs.
On Thursday, government officials announced their mandate, which will see every worker in the country need a type of vaccine passport known as a “green pass” effective October 15. While several other countries in Europe have instituted vaccine passport requirements to visit venues such as restaurants, bars, gyms and other businesses, Italy will be the first to require the pass for private sector employees.
This new law will extend the requirements to every employee of every type of workplace across all sectors in the country, including people who are self-employed. Businesses and staff will be fined as much as 1500 euros if workers are discovered to be working without a valid green pass.
In addition, workers who do not have the green pass could be suspended and lose their pay. However, they cannot be fired for failing to get the pass. In lieu of proof of vaccination, they may also present an official negative test or prove that they have recently recovered from infection with the virus. Unions there have said that the tests should be administered for free to workers who do not wish to be vaccinated; the government disagrees but has capped the price of tests at 15 euros.
In Italy, 68 percent of the population is currently fully vaccinated, while 74 percent of Italians have received at least one vaccine dose. Their death toll is the second highest in Europe after the UK. Italy was the first country in Europe to go into lockdown and has seen more than 130,000 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
In March, Italy ordered its healthcare workers to get vaccinated or face being suspended. More than 700 doctors have already been suspended over the rule, along with an unknown number of nurses and care givers.
The government is hoping that the new move will lead to an “enormous” jump in people getting vaccinated. While some countries in Europe have been requiring health care workers to get the vaccine, none have extended such measures to all types of employees. Public administration minister Renato Brunetta said: “Nothing like this has been done in Europe… we are putting ourselves in the forefront internationally.”
Other European countries are ramping up vaccine mandates
The green pass was first introduced to make it easier to travel within the European Union, but several countries, such as Austria, Cyprus and France, have now started requiring the certificates for different reasons.
France is requiring a health pass for accessing planes, trains, bars and restaurants. Yesterday, the French government announced that nearly 3,000 health care workers in hospitals, health centers and care homes have been suspended for failing to comply with mandatory COVID-19 vaccination measures. Last week, French authorities estimated that 12 percent of hospital staff and 6 percent of private practice doctors are not vaccinated against the virus.
The country’s health minister, Olivier Veran, said these suspensions are only temporary and reassured people that healthcare would remain available. Large demonstrations are being held in France on a weekly basis against the vaccine requirements there.
In the UK, the government recently reversed course on plans to introduce a vaccine certificate system for accessing bigger and more crowded venues like nightclubs, although the option is being reserved as part of the country’s Plan B for winter. However, they have required all care home workers to be fully vaccinated by November 11, and the country’s health secretary has said the measure will most likely extend to all frontline staff working in the country’s health system, the NHS.

Cocktail of pesticides in almost all oranges and grapes, UK study finds.

Traces of 122 different pesticides in 12 most polluted fruit and veg products, many with links to cancer.
Almost all grapes and oranges contain a “cocktail of pesticides” according to research, which has singled out the most polluted fruit and vegetables in our shopping trolleys.
Each year, the government tests samples of groceries for chemicals to see if traces can be found in Britain’s food.
The official figures, analysed by Pesticide Action Network (PAN), found 122 different pesticides in the 12 most polluted products, which the charity calls the “dirty dozen”. Many of these are hazardous to human health; 61% are classified as highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs), a concept used by the UN to identify those substances most harmful to human health or the environment.
The list of pesticides includes 47 with links to cancer, 15 “reproductive or developmental toxins” that can have adverse effects on sexual function and fertility, and 17 cholinesterase inhibitors that can impair the respiratory system and cause confusion, headaches and weakness. A quarter of the pesticides found are suspected endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormone systems, causing an array of health problems including birth defects and developmental disorders.
Every fruit or vegetable on the list contains two or more types of pesticide, with some containing up to 25. Although the levels of individual pesticides are within legal limits, activists fear the combination of multiple chemicals could be particularly damaging to people’s health.
Nick Mole from PAN UK said: “These figures highlight the wide array of chemicals that we are exposed to daily through our diets. While safety limits continue to be set for just one pesticide at a time, the evidence is growing that chemicals can combine to be more toxic, a phenomenon known as the cocktail effect.”
There are also gaps in the data. This year the government chose to test only three of the 12 types of fruit and vegetables from last year’s dirty dozen list compiled by PAN. Strawberries, lemons and pre-packed salad, which topped the previous list, were not tested so there is no way of knowing if the amount of pesticides on these products was reduced.
A spokesperson for PAN said there was no real way to avoid ingesting pesticides, other than campaigning for a reduction in their use.
“The best way for people to avoid pesticides is to buy organic. Of course, almost no one in the UK can financially afford or access a fully organic diet so that is why we publish the dirty dozen – to help consumers prioritise which produce to avoid,” she said.
“In terms of washing, it should remove some residues on the skin of a product (which will often be fungicides used to prevent rotting during storage and transportation). However, many modern pesticides are what are called ‘systemic’ which means that they are absorbed into the plant and distributed throughout its tissues, reaching any fruits or flowers. As a result, pesticide residues are often contained within the body of the produce itself and therefore washing the surface won’t remove them.”
It is also recommended that consumers buy from EU countries as well as the UK, as the EU has by far the most protective pesticide regime in the world and is far more likely to ban a pesticide due to concerns over the harms it causes. The UK regime currently mirrors the EU regime.
There are also environmental implications: half of the top 12 pesticides found are groundwater contaminants, meaning they persist in water bodies, potentially affecting aquatic biodiversity or drinking water quality. The list includes the neonicotinoid acetamiprid which, while thought to be less toxic to pollinators than other neonicotinoids, PAN says could still represent a potential threat to bee health.
Mole added: “Consumers presume that their food has been through rigorous testing and that if an item is available for sale in the UK then it must be safe. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case. We actually have very limited understanding of the long-term impacts to human health of consuming small amounts of tens of different pesticides every day of our lives.”
A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: “All food sold in the UK must meet strict rules on pesticide residue to ensure it is safe to eat. These are enforced via a comprehensive residues monitoring programme overseen by an independent specialist body and in 2020 more than 97% of tested samples were compliant.
“However we continue to encourage a move away from chemical pest control, and recently consulted on a national action plan which aims to minimise the impacts of pesticides and increase the uptake of safer alternatives.”
Fluoride will be added to UK drinking water to cut tooth decay

Fluoride is expected to be added to drinking water across the country after Britain’s chief medical officers concluded that the mineral would cut tooth decay.
Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer for England, and his counterparts in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland cited estimates by Public Health England that adding more fluoride to water supplies would reduce cavities by 17% among the richest children and 28% among the poorest.
They also dismissed safety concerns saying there is no evidence that the ionised form of the element fluorine causes cancer and condemned “exaggerated and unevidenced” suggestions about health risks.
Fluoride is found in low levels in water and is known to protect teeth.
In an evidence review published on Thursday, the medical officers concluded: “As with all things in medicine and public health there is a balance of risk and benefit. There is unquestionably an issue with tooth decay in the UK and an entrenched inequality which needs to be addressed. Fluoridation of water can reduce this common problem.
“On balance, there is strong scientific evidence that water fluoridation is an effective public health intervention for reducing the prevalence of tooth decay and improving dental health equality across the UK. It should be seen as a complementary strategy, not a substitute for other effective methods of increasing fluoride use.”
Tooth decay is the biggest cause of hospitalisation for children aged from five to nine. In the 2019 school year, 23.4% of five-year-olds in England and 26.5% of four- to five-year-olds in Scotland had experienced damage to their teeth.
Local authorities are now responsible for deciding whether to add fluoride to local water supplies.
The health bill going before MPs will give Sajid Javid, the health secretary, the power to order fluoridation across the country. However, any move towards centralisation is not expected soon.
Javid tweeted a link to the chief medical officer’s conclusions and wrote: “Good to see UK CMOs examining how water fluoridation can improve oral health & prevent tooth decay which disproportionately affects more deprived groups. Reinforces why our health and care bill will make it simpler to expand water fluoridation schemes.”
In England, only 5.8 million people drink water with fluoride, some of which occurs naturally. It is more common in other countries including the United States, Brazil, Australia, Canada, Spain, South Korea and New Zealand.
The World Health Organization recommends a safe limit of about twice the levels that fluoridation schemes are likely to set. Whitty and his colleagues said that levels must be “closely monitored” by drinking water inspectors.
The British Dental Association (BDA) welcomed the statement from the four UK chief medical officers. Eddie Crouch, the BDA chair, said: “Every dentist will thank the CMOs for recognising the lasting benefits water fluoridation could bring to the nation’s oral health.
“However, these gains are purely theoretical without upfront investment. Spending here will pay for itself, and ministers need to show they are willing to seize the moment. We need a joined-up approach. Covid has left millions unable to access care, and deep inequalities are now set to widen.”
The Oral Health Foundation said it fully supports the statement from the UK chief medical officers on the effectiveness of fluoridated water and how beneficial it can be in reducing tooth decay.
The argument over whether the mineral should be added to water supplies has been long running. In 2014, Public Health England urged councils in England to add fluoride to improve dental health.
In Australia, dentists and doctors in Queensland reported “extensive tooth decay” in 2019 in parts of the state that refuse to add fluoride to the water supply, especially among children and elderly people.
Indigenous children, many of whom live in communities without fluoride, had a 70% rate of tooth decay. The rate was 55% among all Queensland children aged between five and 15.
In 2016, Australia’s chief health and medical research agency said adding the mineral to drinking water does not lower a person’s IQ, cause cancer or cause any other negative health effects after analysing more than 3,000 studies.

A mother of two who gives her name as Avital decided to make a 1-hour film of the testimonies of those harmed by the Pfizer vaccine or relatives of them, noting that no-one else such as journalists were picking up their stories or publishing any kind of data. Then, she says, they started vaccinating the children. Many did not want to be involved in the project out of fear.
The testimonies of 39 people are broken down according to: heart problems, bleeding and miscarriages, disease outbreak, blood clots, infection & inflammation, skin problems, and neurological problems. Besides specific, serious problems that are readily classifiable, sufferers have been left with a level of pain, immobility and dysfunctionality, including the psychological effects of that. Many were formerly healthy and even athletic regardless of age. Those who had pre-existing conditions that had stabilized or cleared up came back much worse. Some are stripped of important vitamins and minerals their bodies need. It’s clear their lives have been completely turned upside down.

It’s also clear from their testimonies, reading between the lines, that many members of the medical profession are pushing the vaccine, and simply can’t deal with the consequences for their patients once they present with a complex of problems. Hardly any make the connection with the vaccine, or don’t want to.
