For the past two years, a mysterious online organisation has been setting the world’s finest code-breakers a series of seemingly unsolveable problems. But to what end? Welcome to the world of Cicada 3301
One evening in January last year, Joel Eriksson, a 34-year-old computer analyst from Uppsala in Sweden, was trawling the web, looking for distraction, when he came across a message on an internet forum. The message was in stark white type, against a black background.
“Hello,” it said. “We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test. There is a message hidden in this image. Find it, and it will lead you on the road to finding us. We look forward to meeting the few that will make it all the way through. Good luck.”
The message was signed: “3301”.
A self-confessed IT security “freak” and a skilled cryptographer, Eriksson’s interest was immediately piqued. This was – he knew – an example of digital steganography: the concealment of secret information within a digital file. Most often seen in conjunction with image files, a recipient who can work out the code – for example, to alter the colour of every 100th pixel – can retrieve an entirely different image from the randomised background “noise”.
It’s a technique more commonly associated with nefarious ends, such as concealing child pornography. In 2002 it was suggested that al-Qaeda operatives had planned the September 11 attacks via the auction site eBay, by encrypting messages inside digital photographs.
Sleepily – it was late, and he had work in the morning – Eriksson thought he’d try his luck decoding the message from “3301”. After only a few minutes work he’d got somewhere: a reference to “Tiberius Claudius Caesar” and a line of meaningless letters. Joel deduced it might be an embedded “Caesar cipher” – an encryption technique named after Julius Caesar, who used it in private correspondence. It replaces characters by a letter a certain number of positions down the alphabet. As Claudius was the fourth emperor, it suggested “four” might be important – and lo, within minutes, Eriksson found another web address buried in the image’s code.
Feeling satisfied, he clicked the link.
It was a picture of a duck with the message: “Woops! Just decoys this way. Looks like you can’t guess how to get the message out.”
“If something is too easy or too routine, I quickly lose interest,” says Eriksson. “But it seemed like the challenge was a bit harder than a Caesar cipher after all. I was hooked.”
Eriksson didn’t realise it then, but he was embarking on one of the internet’s most enduring puzzles; a scavenger hunt that has led thousands of competitors across the web, down telephone lines, out to several physical locations around the globe, and into unchartered areas of the “darknet”. So far, the hunt has required a knowledge of number theory, philosophy and classical music. An interest in both cyberpunk literature and the Victorian occult has also come in handy as has an understanding of Mayan numerology.
It has also featured a poem, a tuneless guitar ditty, a femme fatale called “Wind” who may, or may not, exist in real life, and a clue on a lamp post in Hawaii. Only one thing is certain: as it stands, no one is entirely sure what the challenge – known as Cicada 3301 – is all about or who is behind it. Depending on who you listen to, it’s either a mysterious secret society, a statement by a new political think tank, or an arcane recruitment drive by some quasi-military body. Which means, of course, everyone thinks it’s the CIA.
For some, it’s just a fun game, like a more complicated Sudoku; for others, it has become an obsession. Almost two years on, Eriksson is still trying to work out what it means for him. “It is, ultimately, a battle of the brains,” he says. “And I have always had a hard time resisting a challenge.”

Every time I read an article about Jennifer Aniston not able to conceive I always wonder is she using the endocrine disrupting agent aspartame (NutraSweet/Equal/Canderel/NutraTaste/951/Spoonful/AminoSweet, etc.) masquerading as a safe additive. It stimulates prolactin, changes the menses and causes infertility. Then if you get off of aspartame and do get pregnant, but get back on it, aspartame is an abortifacient and many times you will miscarry. If the baby survives its a teratogen and causes birth defects and mental retardation. Dr. Russell Blaylock author of “Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills”,www.russellblaylockmd.com says in this book even if your baby appears normal by the time of puberty you could see such problems as dyslexia or behavioral problems. In Dr. Morando Soffritti’s study on aspartame and breast cancer, etc. he states if the baby survives when the mother uses it during pregnancy the child can grow up to cancer.
So, today I decided to do a little research and see what Jennifer Aniston consumes. Note the article discussing what Jennifer Aniston had for lunch – a small salad and a Diet Coke. Bingo! I didn’t have to go any further.

It is also of interest that in the 20 years or more I have taken case histories on aspartame victims there has never been a case where the person did not get pregnant after I advised that aspartame causes infertility and they had to abstain from it if they wanted to start a family.
Dr. H. J. Roberts in his medical text “Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic” says on page 428 (www.sunsentpress.com or www.aspartameispoison.com ) “The issue aspartame associated infertility was initially minimized. This attitude had to be revised in the face of striking evidence thereof — most notably, pregnancy among previously infertile couples in whom at least one spouse had aspartame disease. For example, a female aspartame reactor had been unable to conceive for ten years while drinking diet colas. After avoiding all aspartame products, she became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy boy.”
On page 429 Dr. Roberts discusses the matter of aspartame induced premature menopause. “A 31 year old woman had been on a fertility program for considerable time without success. She consumed 2 – 3 liters of diet sodas daily for over eight years. When increased doses of fertility drugs proved ineffective, coupled with a high FSH level, the diagnosis of “early menopause” was made. ” (Martini: I assume FSH stands for follicle-stimulating hormone.)
Dr. Roberts also says “The concept that aspartame constitutes an “endocrine disrupting chemical” was mentioned earlier. Some suspect that aspartame has contributed to the continuing decline of sperm counts over the past two decades. The observation of testicular atrophy among animals in the Bressler Report is relevant.” The Bressler Report is on my web site at www.mpwhi.com
I will never forgot the lady in the grocery store filling up her cart with Diet Coke. She was talking to a friend and mentioned that her physician had told her after 10 years of not conceiving it was time to adopt. I told her, “You can’t get pregnant because aspartame causes infertility, put back the Diet Coke.” I gave her a flyer and as she began to read I put the Diet Coke back on the shelf. Even when she checked out she had added back her Diet Coke so I gave her Dr. Roberts position paper on aspartame and pregnancy and began putting back her Diet Coke. I’m obviously somewhat pushy when it comes to aspartame.
A few months later I moved to Duluth, Georgia but returned to Sandy Springs maybe a year and a half later or more. Here was this woman running down the street with a little blonde baby under her arm. She said, “You’re that lady who took away my Diet Coke.” I said, “I do that.” She told me she told her physician, “The nerve of that lady telling me I couldn’t get pregnant because I drink Diet Coke with aspartame.” She said her physician said, “It wouldn’t hurt to give it up, she didn’t write this report she gave you, it was a Dr. H. J. Roberts.”

Stonehenge may have been built by Stone Age man as a prehistoric centre for rock music, a new study has claimed.
According to experts from London’s Royal College of Art, some of the stones sound like bells, drums, and gongs when they are ‘played’ – or hit with hammers.
Archaeologists, who have pondered why stone age man transported Bluestones 200 miles from Mynydd Y Preseli in Pembrokshire, South West Wales to Stonehenge, believe this discovery could hold the key.
A giant xylophone? Experts tapped the bluestones of Stonehenge to test for sonic sounds for the first time. According to experts from London’s Royal College of Art, some of the stones sound like bells, drums, and gongs when they are ‘played’ – or hit with hammers.
The ‘sonic rocks’ could have been specifically picked because of their ‘acoustic energy’ which means they can make a variety of noises ranging from metallic to wooden sounding, in a number of notes.
Research published today in the Journal of Time & Mind reveals the surprising new role for the Preseli Bluestones which make up the famous monument, and which were sourced from the Pembrokeshire landscape on and around the Carn Menyn ridge, on Mynydd Preseli, South-West Wales.

There is a mountain of data including already conducted experiments, satellite imagery, lab tests of snow, observations on the ground, and multiple existing patents, all of which point solidly to the conclusion that snow storms are being engineered with well established weather modification processes.
Two known patents for the process of “artificial ice nucliation for weather modification” are posted at the bottom of this article. The Chinese government has openly admitted they are creating ”artificial snow storms” but later backtracked after causing a billion dollars of damage to Beijing.
If the Chinese government can routinely create snow storms out of what should have been a rain event, how much more advanced must our government be at this same process? When monitoring radar images of rain during a storm, it is now common to see the rain “flash out” to snow for no appearant reason. No mountains, no colliding air mass, nothing. The “meteorologists” at the Rothschild’s/ military industrial complex owned Weather Channel call this “turning over to snow”. Why would rain just “turn over” to snow for no reason?
Engineered Ice Nucleation Cools Air Masses
Many of the snow events occurring around the US, even at this time of year, are amazingly still occurring at above freezing temperatures. Some are at temperatures of 10 degrees or more above freezing. How is this possible? Have the laws of physics changed?
It is done with various processes of chemical ice nucleation. This is the same as the first aid chemical ice pack. Mix the chemicals and you have ice. Whatever the existing temperatures of a storm and the surrounding air mass at the time the artificial nucleation is commenced, temperatures are lowered significantly further by the nucleation process. If the nucleation process is started at far above freezing temperatures, then the temps can fall to near freezing or below as the process continues. If the region where an “ice nucleated” event is being carried out is already well below freezing, the temperatures will fall to still lower temperatures. If the chemical nucleation process is inflicted aggressively enough, in already cold regions, temperatures can be driven to deadly levels well below zero. Northern Europe is currently in the grip of what appears to be just such a geoengineered event.
Why Would They Do This?
First, because they can. Why would the global power elite detonate over 1800 nuclear bombs? Because there is no one to stop these experiments. Because there is no regulation whatsoever of the ongoing global geoengineering programs though many “outlines” for such governance exist as if these programs are not yet a reality. There are likely other straight forward reasons. 60 years of global climate experimentation have done horrific damage to the global climate system. The planet is warming, it would appear in large part due to the damage done by the ongoing geoengineering programs. Massive ozone holes and methane releases are occurring. Now it appears that those at the helm of the global spraying programs are trying to “cover up” the damage that has been done from the spraying by spraying yet more, and probably with an ever growing list of toxic elements. Isn’t this the true definition of insanity? Doing the same thing on an ever bigger scale and expecting a different result?
Though all available data makes clear that stratospheric aerosol geoengineering (SAG) can and does cool large regions temporarily, it comes at the cost of a worsened overall warming to the planet. NASA’s own data confirms this.

While making the documentary Dirty Wars, Scahill met the survivors of secret US hit squads in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia – and promised to tell their stories.
Jeremy Scahill, whose provocative documentary Dirty Wars is released in the UK this week, has been described as a “progressive journalist” and an activist in the same mould as Glenn Greenwald. Is “progressive” a word he is comfortable with? “It’s not a term I would reject in terms of my personal politics,” he says, “but I see myself as an independent journalist and my mission is to try to tell stories about real people.”
Scahill’s critics write him off as an activist or an advocate, but he argues that all journalists have a point of view. “Oftentimes the ones who are activists on behalf of the state don’t get labelled as activists. People who accept the state’s version of events are considered objective journalists. People who question the state’s version of events, particularly in the face of overwhelming evidence that the state is either lying or involved in extra-legal activity, are tarred with the brush of being activists. There is a systematic smearing of anyone who questions the state, while people who are slavishly devoted to advocacy for the state somehow wear the crown of objectivity.”
The real people in the film – and the book, Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield, which accompanies it – are the victims of what are, in effect, US hit squads operating in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and other places where the American government is waging its “war on terror”. Starting with one murderous attack on an Afghan police chief and his family in eastern Afghanistan, Scahill widens the focus to portray an out-of-control US military, operating through a shadowy organisation called the Joint Special Operations Command, stalking an ever increasing number of targets in an apparently endless war. It is a compelling picture that tries to make sense of the spiralling number of drone strikes and targeted assassinations; tries, too, to prise a reaction from viewers who have been desensitised by a decade of such killings.

Scahill began work on the film in early 2010, when he travelled to Afghanistan with documentary director Richard Rowley, a friend and colleague with whom he had worked in Baghdad. Rowley wanted to make a film about Afghanistan; Scahill wanted to examine President Obama’s hawkish foreign policy. They have ended up doing both. “We started to investigate a series of night raids [by US forces],” says Scahill, “and discovered that the people doing the raids were members of this elite secret unit. When we realised where else in the world they were operating, we realised we had a film.”

Astronauts And Mice Return From Space With Altered Eyes.
About one in five astronauts report vision changes after space missions. A new, small study in mice takes a look at what might cause those changes at a molecular level.
When he rocketed up to the International Space Station in March 2009, NASA astronaut Mike Barratt needed glasses to see things in the distance. When he returned to Earth in October, he no longer had trouble seeing far-off objects—but he suddenly needed reading glasses. By the time he talked with CNN in 2012, his vision still hadn’t returned to normal.
In surveys, NASA has found one in five astronauts report vision changes after space missions. NASA researchers have linked the changes to exposure to microgravity, which increases pressure inside the head and alters the shape of the eye; scientists worry this change in pressure may cause more serious neurological effects. NASA has also studied whether genetic differences between people might make some more vulnerable to eye problems in space than others. Such studies are preliminary, however, and researchers still aren’t sure exactly what’s happening. The agency is examining the issue closely, as it may affect astronauts’ ability to visit Mars and go on other long-term space trips.
Now a new study has looked into what might be happening to astronaut eyes at a molecular level. In a small study, scientists sent six mice to the International Space Station for 13 days. (The little guys rode aboard the last Discovery shuttle mission.) After the mice returned to Earth, the scientists, who came from several Houston research institutes, found the mice’s optic nerves had physical damage. The researchers also saw increased signs of stress in the cells in the mice’s eyes. These signs subsided within seven days after the mice returned to Earth, although the physical damage didn’t heal. The study didn’t extend past seven days after the mice’s return to Earth.
The study offers a preliminary look at what might be happening in the eyes of human astronauts, the study’s lead scientist, Patricia Chevez-Barrios, said in a statement. Chevez-Barrios is a doctor of eye diseases with the Methodist Hospital in Houston. Her team pinpointed particular molecules that the space-faring mice produced in greater quantities than similar mice kept on Earth. The space mice’s eyes made more beta-amyloid, which is associated with traumatic brain injury in humans, as well as caspace-3, which is associated with damage to the retina.
There are still many questions about how well these results apply to humans. Humans may suffer more damage than these mice did because they stay in space for much longer during missions. On the other hand, the breed of mouse in this experiment are especially sensitive to light, so some of the damage they suffered may have been from light exposure, not going to space.

A reverse microwave has been created which can chill any drink in a matter of seconds
The new system can cool drinks, including wine bottles and fizzy drink cans, from room temperature to four degrees in a matter of seconds.
The invention of the microwave revolutionised cooking but now a ‘reverse-microwave’ does the opposite, it can chill a drink in 45 seconds.
Up until now there has not been a gadget available to cool items without a long wait.
A new system can cool drinks, including wine bottles and fizzy drink cans, from room temperature to four degrees in a matter of seconds.
The unit can cool drinks in all types of containers to different temperatures without disturbing the carbonation.
The technology, which has been developed with the help of research funding from the EU, works on the basis of a cooling vortex which spins the drink round.
It uses a stop start rotational sequence to create what is known as a Rankine vortex- which is a collapsed vortex in a viscous fluid.
This enables the drinks to mix without fizzing.
The beverage is rotated at speed around twin axes in water to keep it in its original state while quickly bringing down its temperature.
V-Tex, which invented the technology, say that the process requires more than 80 per cent less energy than many standard drinks chillers.
Failed Monsanto GMO Corn Pushed on African Countries with Help of Bill Gates.

Even if you aren’t opposed to genetically modified crops (with all this information, how couldn’t you be) and even if you like Bill Gates and his ventures (but with all this information, how could you), this latest should be enough to get you perturbed. And if you are anti-GMO and knowledgeable of the shady and questionable ways of the Gates Foundation, this latest story out of Africa will truly make your blood boil.
According to a recent statement from the African Centre for Biosafety (ACB), failed GM corn from Monsanto is now being pushed on African countries with help from the Gates Foundation. This maize, known as MON810, has been grown in South Africa for 15 years, where it “failed miserably”. But so as not to call the seed a complete waste, Monsanto and Bill Gates are now pushing it into countries like Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya—countries that need agricultural help.
“Monsanto got the science completely wrong on this one. Independent biosafety scientists have discovered that the inheritance of resistance in African stem borers is a dominant, not recessive, trait as erroneously assumed,” explained the Director of the ACB Miriam Mayet. “Hence the insect resistance management strategies that Monsanto developed, and accepted by our regulators, based on these erroneous assumptions, were utterly ineffective.”
What this means, simply, is that pests in South Africa developed a massive resistance to the chemicals in the corn, annihilating the one prominent argument for GM crops, that it is resistant to insects. The corn was such a disaster that Monsanto willingly compensated farmers for the pesticides they had to spray on their crops to further fight the insects. Compensation from Monsanto? Weird.
Now, to not waste the waste of a seed, Monsanto has donated the MON810 technology to a “philanthropic” venture of the Gates Foundation and Monsanto called Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA), and they’ve done it royalty-free.
For small African farmers with few resources, WEMA was seen as a positive thing, providing seeds that could withstand harsh conditions. But now, drought-tolerant varieties aren’t the only seeds being pushed onto the continent.
Kenya and Uganda have already begun field trials on MON810. Mozambique is changing their biosafety laws to allow the GM crop and WEMA is putting pressure on Tanzania to do the same. Currently, Tanzanian biosafety laws allow Monsanto to be held “strictly liable” for damages that could arise from the use of MON810; WEMA is understandably opposed to this. After all, they know the dangers associated with their crops even if they don’t want to admit it.
Interestingly, and frighteningly, MON810 has been genetically altered into a variety of Egyptian corn known as “Ajeeb Yieldgard” which has already been patented by Monsanto and approved for commercial growing while circumventing Egyptian biosafety laws. The Egyptian government itself has published peer reviewed studies indicating the risk of MON810 to human and animal health.
Put best by ACB researcher Haidee Swanby, “The scariest revelation is that GM producers and regulatory authorities are making it all up as they go along, while the massive biotech PR machinery spreads the myth that these crops are connected to feeding the poor in Africa.”

The Moon could be a “beautiful” source of minerals and energy, a top Chinese scientist has told the BBC.
Exotic materials including helium-3 and the potential for solar power could prove invaluable for humankind, he says.
The comments come from Prof Ouyang Ziyuan of the department of lunar and deep space exploration.
His first interview with the foreign media provides insights into China’s usually secretive space programme.
Prof Ouyang was speaking ahead of the first Chinese attempt to land an unmanned spacecraft on the lunar surface.
The Chang’e 3 lander is due to launch imminently, perhaps as soon as Sunday evening, UK time.
It will be the first to make a soft touchdown on the Moon since an unmanned Russian mission in 1976.
No humans have set foot on the lunar surface since America’s Apollo missions ended in 1972.
Prof Ouyang is an adviser to the mission and his comments reveal the scale of Chinese thinking about the Moon.
He said the forthcoming venture would land in an ancient crater 400km wide called Sinus Iridum, thought to be relatively flat and clear of rocks, and explore its geology.
He explained that there were three motivations behind the drive to investigate the Moon.
“First, to develop our technology because lunar exploration requires many types of technology, including communications, computers, all kinds of IT skills and the use of different kinds of materials. This is the key reason,” he told BBC News.
“Second, in terms of the science, besides Earth we also need to know our brothers and sisters like the Moon, its origin and evolution and then from that we can know about our Earth.
“Third, in terms of the talents, China needs its own intellectual team who can explore the whole lunar and solar system – that is also our main purpose.”
After the first two Chang’e craft orbited the Moon, the next two missions will try to land on it and the following two will attempt to bring samples back to Earth.
Scientists Discover That Cannabis May Reduce Brain Damage Caused By Alcohol.

Chemicals within cannabis have powerful antioxidant properties, and scientists believe this can protect the brain from damage. Too much alcohol can lead to permanent brain damage, among other things. A recent study from the University of Kentucky and the University of Maryland concluded that a chemical in marijuana called cannabidiol (CBD) could be used to prevent alcohol-induced brain damage. The study was published in September of 2013 in the journal Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior. (1)
The study outlines how excessive alcohol consumption results in neuro-degeneration as well as behavioral and cognitive impairments that are hypothesized to contribute to the chronic and relapsing nature of alcoholism. As a result they aimed to study the transdermal delivery of cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of alcohol-induced neuro-degeneration. At the conclusion of the study, results demonstrated the feasibility of using CBD transdermal delivery systems for the treatment of alcohol-induced neurodegeneration.(1)
Just like THC, CBD is another chemical found in marijuana, the difference is that it doesn’t get you ‘high.’ Both chemicals are strong antioxidants.
These results justify further preclinical development of transdermal CBD for the treatment of alcohol-induced neurodegeneration. It has been suggested that the neuroprotective effects of CBD observed during binge alcohol induced neurodegeneration are due to its high antioxidant capacity. (1)
The authors note that CBD acts as a stronger antioxidant than many well-known antioxidants. This new study was done on rat models, using both a skin patch and regular needle injection. Both methods produced similar magnitudes of neuroprotection, approximately 50 percent. Further studies need to be done here before human trials can begin. It’s surprising that human trials have yet to begin, it seems they should have began ages ago. Year after year we have credible published studies showing the clear link between cannabis and a healthy body environment.
The potential health benefits of cannabis are overwhelming, and potentially very threatening to the pharmaceutical industry. It is a shame that despite all of the evidence supporting the medicinal properties of this plant, it still has a negative connotation within the mainstream. Nobody can deny it’s medicinal benefits, and given the tremendous amount of information and research to support it, it seems pretty clear that this plant is a natural miracle.
Things seem to be changing, however. Last week, a European based pharmaceutical company called GW pharmaceuticals announced that they are set to commence its first ever phase of clinical trials for the treatment of brain cancer. You can read more about that here. A couple of months ago, I wrote an article presenting 20 medical studies that prove cannabis can cure cancer; I’ve presented them in this article (see below). If we want to stay on the topic of brain damage, dozens of studies have shown the potential benefits of cannabis on damaged brain tissue. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation revealed that cannabinoids promote embryonic and adult hippocampus neurogenesis. (2) The list goes on and on, and it seems to be never-ending, especially when it comes to cannabis and the brain.
